MAC Adelaide Lightning went down to Townsville Fire 88-60 on Saturday night at Titanium Security Arena in their first game for 2016.
A solid crowd of more than 600 came to the Arena to support the Lightning, a fantastic backing to kick off the new year.
The team fought hard and remained competitive for most of the game but the reigning WNBL champs proved to be too strong for the Lightning with South Australian, Cayla George finishing with 26 points, 12 rebounds and Suzy Batkovic with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
Leilani Mitchell had a strong game with 16 points in the first quarter alone and another solid contribution from Mikaela Ruef saw her with 11 points, 8 rebounds at the end of the match.
“It was a tough game on Saturday versus the reigning WNBL Champions, Townsville,” said Head Coach, Tracy York.
“We were competitive in the first three quarters and in the first quarter we stayed within touch due mainly to an outstanding offensive contribution from Leilani Mitchell who had 16 first quarter points.”
“In the fourth quarter we couldn’t peg back the 14 point deficit and Townsville finished strongly. Their size and outside shooting were too much but it was definitely an improvement from the last time we played.”
MAC Adelaide Lightning are preparing for their next home game at Wayville Sports Centre this Friday, 8 January. Tipoff is 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased at the door. Like the Adelaide Lightning Facebook page for more information.
