MAC Adelaide Lightning can hold their heads high after a fantastic season both on and off the court.
The Lightning went down to Townsville Fire 64-57 in their final game last Saturday night but it wasn’t without a fight. With four of the starters in double figures, including Mikaela Ruef and Kelly Bowen finishing with double-doubles, Leilani Mitchell with 10 points, 9 assists and Kayla Standish with 11 points, 8 rebounds the Lightning were giving Townsville a real run for their money until they fell short in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter.
The persistence and agility the Lightning showed in this game reflected a team that has come so far since the beginning of the season and there is a lot to be proud of. With ten wins under their belt and an admirable team culture, every player can be proud of the lessons they learnt in the 2015/16 MAC Adelaide Lightning team.
“Our season has been successful on and off the floor,” said Head Coach Tracy York.
“For a group coming together late and with opportunities given to players, we worked hard to establish a culture and play a good brand of basketball. As we did this our improvement was outstanding and we were able to win a number of games.”
“We showed that with a game plan, confidence and effort we could play exciting and competitive basketball and were rewarded with huge support within Adelaide, SA and nationally.”
A strong community backing was evident from day one and the Lightning would like to thank their solid fan base who assisted the team in keeping up momentum all season.
Additionally, without the support from sponsors the Lightning wouldn’t have had the fortunate season they did so a special thanks goes to the Motor Accident Commission, Bob Jane T-Marts, City Holden, Lee Green, The Arkaba Hotel, Fentons Conveyancing, Flex Physio, Avenues Dry Cleaners and Paul Rees Trophies.
With the recent announcement of the Adelaide 36ers and the Adelaide Lightning coming together for the 2016/17 season, there’s a lot to be excited about with the move providing future viability and growth for the Lightning, as the showcase for female basketball in South Australia.
Now you may not know, but Head Coach Tracy York is a poet at heart and she penned a poem to summarise the season which she read out at the End of Season Awards on Sunday. There are a number of inside jokes that the team enjoyed; but even if you don’t know what Tracy was getting at, you’ll enjoy.
2015/16 MAC Adelaide Lightning
As I look back on our season and what we did achieve
From the start to now it’s hard to believe
A new group coming together from scratch
The level and intensity early on we found hard to match
A change in mindset, commitment and work rate
Set us up to control our destiny and fate
No longer within ourselves did we expect to lose
Could’ve had a bit to do with Kelly changing those slippery shoes
We lifted and played with energy abound
Watch out though as Ruefy would take your rebound
Mikaela D was crafty and smart
And we certainly missed her in the latter part
The wins started to come and we made it two from two
When Kayla joined as the mid-season recruiting coup
Jess G and Tara gave us defence and possession plays
Jess B and Miki working hard everyday
Taylor, Mollie and Ieva provided a steady punch
Alex and Morgs showed they could be used in the crunch
Our extended squad with Shannon, Danni and Jade were a great fit
Along with Sarah, Bianca and Hannah who did fully commit
As we won more games we were becoming a danger
Still keeping our eyes on the road being a MAC Game Changer
Our Physio’s Scott and Jason were great from FLEX
Philip and Kelley from S&C helped the girls with their pecs
Dr Janet provided her expertise and advice
Michelle and Pat always there with water and ice
Aletta, Brendan and Paul with their magic massage hands
Keeping ahead of all those recovery demands
Great people to assist with Jodie and Simon on video and scouts
And PC there for Indi’s, trainings and timeouts
We’ve come home strong and got into the groove
On and off the court the team’s been on the improve
Thanks to Mark, Michael, Sally and all the staff from BSA
And of course our diminutive point guard, awesome and chilled #BeLikeLei
