MAC Adelaide Lightning coming home strong

MAC Adelaide Lightning made it two from two, in one of the brightest weekend’s for the team this season.

The Lightning defeated the Melbourne Boomers by 23 at home on Friday to surpass them on the ladder and then took on UC Capitals in Canberra on Sunday in what ended up being a tight clash with the Lightning eventually winning 85-82.

After Sunday’s game against the Capitals, Head Coach Tracy York said, “Having completed another double header two weeks in a row we’re happy to come home with two good wins.”

“We had a convincing win on Friday against Melbourne and a great first half against Canberra and then the ability to withstand a big comeback to win by three.”

With Melbourne down key players, Elyse Penaluna and Brittany Smart and sporting an injured Tess Madgen off the bench on Friday, it was an opportunity Adelaide needed to take advantage of and they did.

Kayla Standish was outstanding with 26 points and 7 steals and Mikaela Ruef filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block, but it was a team effort including some fantastic contributions off the bench that got the result.

The Lightning finished with 41 rebounds and made the most of Melbourne’s 28 turnovers to win 70-47 at the final buzzer.

On Sunday, Standish continued her weekend in the zone with 20 points and 9 rebounds while Ruef etched closer to the league’s best rebounder finishing with a double-double (15 points, 16 rebounds) making it 30 rebounds for the weekend. Leilani Mitchell continued to show her value to the team with 21 points, 8 assists while Bowen and Dombkins finished with similar stats, both with 4 rebounds, 3 assists each and 7 and 8 points respectively. Off the bench Tara Robinson (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), Alex Ciabattoni (3 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Jess Good (6 points, 1 assist) proved the team worked together to get the win on the road.

“You have to hand it to the girls for making it 8 wins this season and 3 of the last 4,” York said.

It’s great to see so much support from MAC Adelaide Lightning fans, both at the games and online. With just two more home games for the season, the Lightning will benefit from its fans strong backing to finish out their 2015/16 WNBL campaign with style.
