Grand Final Game 1 Review

In a hard fought battle your Jayco Dandenong Rangers pushed the hometown Sydney Uni Flames to the very end in Game 1 of the WNBL Grand Final series, falling to a fourth quarter Flames run to lose 91-82.

Dandenong led by as much as five points nearing half-time in a frenetic and impressive start (especially offensively) from both sides, and it was much the same in the second half. However the Flames were just too strong at home in the end, using a 22-14 final quarter to go up 1-0 in the best-of-3 series.

It was a tough ending for a gallant Jayco Rangers squad, who matched the Flames blow-for-blow throughout the game, with the final scoreline not reflecting what was a tight contest.

The Jayco Rangers refused to be weighed down by the tough loss however, with Rangers star Sara Blicavs keeping an optimistic view ahead of Friday’s Game 2 here at Dandenong Stadium.

‘We made some silly errors on defence and a smart team like Sydney will punish you for those errors’, said Blicavs. ‘But the best thing about a three-game series is we get another crack at them and it will be at home so we will get a feeling in our stadium like they had tonight.’

Sara optimism may have stemmed from her superb game in Game 1, picking up 25 points & 8 rebounds as she got to wherever she wanted against the Sydney Uni defense. Nat Novosel was also fantastic coming off the bench for Dandenong, picking up 14 points of her own and slicing through the Flames defence for easy Rangers buckets.

We’ll now look ahead to defending our homecourt and staying alive in Game 2 of the WNBL Grand Final series, with a Rangers win forcing a massive Game 3 decider back in Sydney. It’s time to get behind your Dandenong stars in full force now Rangers fans! We need you more than ever for this one!
