Ahead of tonight’s first preseason hitout for our Jayco Rangers against a SEABL Invitational team, Dandenong Basketball is pleased to officially announce the final two roster positions for the 2016/17 WNBL Season.
Fresh off playing in our SEABL Championship win over Kilsyth last weekend, Briahna Whatman and Rachel Antoniadou will now turn their attention to the upcoming WNBL season as confirmed starters of the 12 member Jayco Rangers squad.
Briahna returns to the WNBL line up, having been part of the 2015/16 team. The 22 year old guard has been part of the long standing successful SEABL program playing in three championship winning teams, also having a stint in college basketball in the US and now is looking to step up to further establish herself in the Jayco Rangers line up.
For 19 year old Rachel Antoniadou it marks a full circle return to the Jayco Rangers. Rachel was part of the 2014/15 squad making her WNBL debut at only 17 years of age, where from that moment she was destined to head to the American college system. Rachel took up a student-athlete opportunity with Florida State University playing 21 games as a freshman guard during the 2015/16 season. As revealed back in June in an interview with the Star Community Newspaper group, Antoniadou decided to return to Australia after eight months abroad opting to take her journey in a different direction. She rejoined the Rangers SEABL team, in the hope that she would get a recall to the WNBL Squad and that has become a reality.
Head Coach Larissa Anderson told Dandenong Basketball she is thrilled to have Briahna and Rachel back on board, stating that she ‘cannot say enough positive things’ about the two guards.
“Whilst they are both quite opposite with what they bring on court, both are very talented, loyal Dandenong Juniors that have contributed a great deal to our program”, said Anderson. “I am thrilled to have them both on board and look forward to seeing them thrive with this opportunity and continue their development”.
