The Jayco Rangers have almost secured a 2016-17 WNBL Playoffs birth despite losing to Townsville Fire on the weekend, with a Bendigo Spirit loss helping the Rangers chances of a guaranteed playoffs birth.

A win against Townsville would have secured an automatic spot for Dandenong but just wasn’t meant to be, as Opals & WNBL legend Suzy Batkovic dominated the game with a 26 point, 11 rebound performance to give the Fire a 92-78 win.

At one point down 17 in the third, the Jayco Rangers fought back to within 8 at two separate times in the fourth but were continually pushed back by a hot shooting Fire squad, draining 13-24 threes for the game.

It was a solid night offensively for the Rangers, with Sara Blicavs, Nat Novosel & Steph Cumming all scoring in double digits, and the team shooting a decent 43% from the field. But defensively Dandenong had no answer for a hungry Townsville squad, who needed and got two big wins for the weekend to near-on secure their own finals place.

However whilst one Townsville Fire win came at the expense of the Jayco Rangers, the other win against Bendigo benefited the Rangers greatly, with the Spirit now a full three-games behind us on the WNBL ladder. They will now need to win all three of their remaining games to have any chance of making the playoffs, with the Rangers needing just one more victory to guarantee a top-four finish.

Talk about an up-and-down weekend Rangers fans! The best news: Your Jayco Rangers have nearly secured a WNBL Finals birth! Only one more win away, let’s all get behind our Dandenong stars to ensure we get wins in our three remaining games.
