In two enthralling WNBL games the Jayco Rangers tasted both victory and defeat, as we dropped one at home against Bendigo but came through on a huge stage against our fierce rival, the Melbourne Boomers.
Dandenong Stadium was treated to an outstanding WNBL game on Friday night, but it just wasn’t meant to be for your Rangers, as Bendigo’s Kelsey Griffin torched Dandenong from deep in the first half, allowing the other Spirit starters to get open in the second. The Jayco Rangers managed to pull the lead back to 4 with just two minutes to go in the fourth, fighting valiantly to win against a fiery offence, but in the end just falling short.
That wasn’t the case on Monday however, as your Jayco Rangers managed to topple their biggest rival in a Cup Day Eve spectacular! The Melbourne Boomers got off to a flying start in the first, outgunning Dandenong 29-16 in the first, but the Rangers quickly dug in and locked down the Boomers in the second to be all tied up at the half.
From there it was a constant to-and-fro battle, with both teams swapping leads right up until the final buzzer. Sara Blicavs was once again massive for the Rangers, scoring 28 points on 66% shooting, while Amelia Todhunter dominated the game in the most unlikeliest of ways, as the shortest player on the court came up with a team-high 12 rebounds and a body-hurling 5 steals.
Tied all the way down to the final seconds, it took a Steph Cumming drive with just 5 seconds left to put the Rangers up, with Steph hitting two dramatic free throws to give Dandenong the victory!
The win keeps us at a healthy 4-2 record, tied with Bendigo and Perth on the WNBL ladder. We now look ahead to two clashes with the Canberra Capitals, with one this Sunday November 6th at Dandenong Stadium, followed by a special Rangers home game in Traralgon on Saturday November 12th.
We hope to see you right here this Sunday Rangers fans! Let’s keep the momentum going and cheer the Jayco Rangers on to another big home victory, and maybe 1st spot on the WNBL ladder!!!
