The Deakin Melbourne Boomers have added another player to a growing squad that is starting to take shape ahead of the 2016/17 WNBL season with Alice Kunek confirmed to be in the purple and gold once again.

Kunek, who has been a young member of the Opals in recent years, is looking forward to continuing her development under Coach Guy Molloy and can’t wait to get back out on court and start preparations.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back with the Deakin Melbourne Boomers for the 2016/2017 season,” said Alice, the high-achieving Deakin University student adding, “This club is like a family to me and I know we can do some special things this year. We have amazing supporters, we just love getting out on court and playing in front of them at the State Basketball Centre.

“I love playing under Guy, and I’m excited to be playing with the talented group he and management are bringing together. Also, thank you so much to our fans who were so patient with us last year through our run of injuries. This season is going to be much bigger, better and exciting,” Alice added.

For Molloy, ensuring Kunek was in Boomers colours again was a priority during the off-season and he is pleased the talented scorer will continue her rise in Australian women’s basketball in Melbourne.

“We are so pleased Alice has remained with the Boomers. After the normal readjustment to a new Club last season, Alice started to build good momentum. Her defence and effort levels were first rate, and her trademark shooting came on strongly after Christmas. Few players work as hard as Alice and we’re hoping for big things this season,” Molloy said.

Kunek’s signing brings the number of players announced by the Boomers to seven, with an international recruit set to be announced within days according to General Manager, Justin Nelson.

“It’s been a very busy few weeks for us, which is exciting as we build towards pre-season games starting next month. We will announce an international recruit within days, plus we have tryouts for development players starting shortly,” Nelson confirmed.

“There is a real sense of energy and anticipation building. Membership sales have been really good, we have a number of basketball associations and clubs joining as partners, and of course we have a great core group of players ready to get started. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Boomers Family.”
