Boomers Announce Game Against Big V Invitational Team

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will add a new dimension to a busy pre-season schedule with a game against a Big V Invitational Team on Saturday September 10 at Hillview Stadium (Rosebud), starting at 2pm.

With the Boomers tipped to have most of its squad together for the game, the Big V Invitational outfit will get the chance to test itself against some of Australia’s best players, while an expected big crowd will be treated to a great game and a chance to meet their favourite players.

“This is a great opportunity for the BigV players to take to the court and showcase their ability against a WNBL team,” said coach of the team, Southern Peninsula’s Gerard Hillier.

“The BigV league has a great range of talent that competes week in, week out, and having the opportunity to put their abilities to the test will be very rewarding for all involved. On behalf of the team I would like to thank the Melbourne Boomers for supplying this opportunity, another great example of how they are supporting and working with the basketball community.”

The Big V outfit will feature players from a number of clubs and include four American imports, along with well-known and experienced players like Lauren Pearce, Chelsea Burns and Jackie Vanderzaag.

“It’s a really good team and we expect a tough game,” said Boomers coach Guy Molloy, adding, “The chance to play against some of the best players from the Big V will help us prepare for the WNBL season, plus hopefully provide an opportunity for the Big V players to showcase their talents against a WNBL team.”

For the Boomers, the chance to play a pre-season game against players from local basketball associations is something General Manager Justin Nelson would like to see annually every September.

“Our Boomers squad this season represents no less than twelve associations from across Melbourne and regional Victoria, it is something we are very proud of as we value our position in the WNBL as being largely representative of the basketball talent in this state.

“Playing against this Big V Invitational team is about promoting women’s basketball and further connecting the elite with the grassroots. We are all really looking forward to the game,” added Nelson.
