Boomers Announce Pre-Season Schedule

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will play five games in the lead up to the 2016/17 WNBL season, with opponents including Bendigo and Dandenong, along with two visiting USA universities, and in an exciting move there will be a game against a Big V Invitational team.

In a further move to support Victorian basketball, the Boomers will take all five games on the road, playing at different venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

“It’s really important for us to have a strong pre-season where Guy can prepare the team for what will be a really competitive league, whilst also ensuring we embrace our fans and the basketball associations that continue to show outstanding support for the Boomers,” said GM, Justin Nelson.

“For us it’s all about connecting the grassroots with the elite, so the chance to take our team out to suburban and country venues is something we always look forward to. That connection is vital.”

The official pre-season for the Boomers starts on August 11 with a number of promising development players tipped to be on show for the first time when the visiting South Dakota Coyotes come to Melbourne.

“We’re about to start our tryouts for Development Players with more than forty players representing twenty-three basketball associations competing for spots with our squad and some of our early pre-season games will be a further chance for them to develop,” said Nelson.

“In particular we are looking forward to a game against the Big V Invitational team, it’s a new initiative and one that will give many of the talented players in the Victorian State League a chance to play against a WNBL team.”
