The Deakin Melbourne Boomers overcame the absence of captain Tess Madgen (injured) to register a much-needed win against Bendigo Spirit, 78-58, bringing plenty of smiles to a vocal crowd, and their sidelined captain.
Expected to miss just the one game, Madgen watched on as her team lifted a gear and put on one of their best defensive efforts for the season, making scoring extremely tough for the visiting Spirit with Gabe Richards (14pts) the only player to hit double digits.
Despite trailing 17-20 after the first quarter, the Boomers looked sharp and a resulting 61-38 run over the next three quarters provided plenty of highlights.
Elyse Penaluna (25pts, 7rbs, 2 treys), Alice Kunek (21pts, 6rbs, 3 treys) and Britt Smart (14pts, 11rbs, 5ast) led the way, while Kate Oliver delivered 8pts at a perfect 100 per cent clip.
The Boomers head to Canberra in Round 8, before heading back home to face the Perth Lynx on Saturday December 5 at the State Basketball Centre (7:30pm tip-off). Tickets are available at www.trybooking.com/HLXE
