Another huge crowd, adding to the Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ amazing 60 per cent increase in spectator numbers this season, turned up to see their team eclipse the Stars in a thrilling season finale.
Hampered by injuries and following a string of losses, the Boomers came to play in a major way against the SEQ Stars and delivered right on cue with the club also celebrating 32 years of the Boomers, attracting more than two dozen former players.
The home team jumped out to a great start, led admirably by Alice Kunek (23pts, 8rbs, 6 treys), Maddie Garrick (19pts, 4 treys) and a free-moving Tess Madgen (15pts, 7rbs, 8ast, 3 treys). From there the Boomers never looked back, entertaining a vocal crowd of more than 1300 on their way to an 81-67 win.
Post-match celebrations included hundreds of spectators meeting the players out on court for their regular signing session, while at an open team function later in the night it was announced that exciting guard Maddie Garrick had won the Jewel Empire Most Popular Player Award.
