The Deakin Melbourne Boomers is enhancing its renowned family culture by welcoming back former great Katrina Hibbert in a coaching role for the 2016/17 WNBL season.
A two-time WNBL MVP and All-Star Five during her 112 games with the Boomers, Hibbert joins Melbourne’s coaching staff as a Development Coach and can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really excited to have this opportunity to be a part of the Boomers family again, it was such a big part of my playing career for many years. I have so many fond memories tied to the club so to be involved again feels a lot like coming home,” Karina said with a big smile.
Enjoying great success in the Big V as the senior women’s coach of Hume City, Hibbert, or Froggy as she is affectionately known, is looking forward to taking her coaching career to the next level.
“To have the chance to develop and grow as a coach with Guy Molloy and Al McAughtry, who both have such a wealth of knowledge and experience, is going to be invaluable to me, and hopefully I can offer some insight from my experiences as well.
“I can’t wait to get started and begin working with the talented roster that has been put together. It will also be great to see all the supporters again, they are such a big part of the Boomers family and I look forward to having them all come out to support the team,” Katrina added.
For Coach Molloy, the appointment of Hibbert finalises his coaching staff for the coming season.
“I am pleased to welcome Katrina to the Deakin Melbourne Boomers coaching staff. Katrina was a champion player and has long links to the club. She is already proving herself an accomplished coach and we’re confident her experience and counsel will be an enormous positive for our team,” Molloy said.
General Manager Justin Nelson believes the next steps for Hibbert in her coaching career will be exciting ones.
“We have assembled coaches who have also excelled at State level within the Basketball Victoria pathway, something we support strongly and view the Deakin Melbourne Boomers playing a vital role in continuing the development of these coaches. We are looking forward to the great things set to come from Guy, Al, Katrina and Nicole, they present as quality individuals with a firm desire to see the Boomers succeed.”
