The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will take some WNBL flavour to the seaside town of Rosebud this weekend, the visit to Victoria’s peninsula region forming part of the Boomers’ pre-season campaign where they will play a Big V Invitational team.
With a number of well-known Big V players set to test their skill against Melbourne’s WNBL contingent, a sell-out crowd is expected at Hillview Stadium, the home of the Southern Peninsula Sharks. Saturday afternoon’s game (Sept 10) will tip-off at 2pm.
“It’s a great initiative, the team is really looking forward to it,” said Boomers Coach Guy Molloy, adding “At this stage we expect most of our senior team to step on court, so the local fans will get the chance to see some really good talent on display.”
A part of the club’s Connecting Grassroots With The Elite focus, General Manager Justin Nelson believes the importance of taking the WNBL out to wider communities is vital for ensuring more people within junior basketball get an opportunity to meet elite-level players.
“Southern Peninsula Basketball is a fantastic supporter of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, they value the importance of connecting their young aspiring players with elite WNBL players, so we’re really looking forward to joining everyone down in Rosebud for the game,” said Nelson.
“I think the game also provides an opportunity for players in the Big V to play against a WNBL team, no doubt it’s an exciting time for them as well.”
Saturday’s game marks the start to a busy fortnight for the Boomers with a Family Day (Sept 11 @ State Basketball Centre) and games against Bendigo Spirit (Sept 17 @ Ballarat) and Dandenong (Sept 23 @ Nunawading).
