The WNBL hasn’t been to Geelong since 2008, but that will change in early January when the Deakin Melbourne Boomers head to The Arena for a showdown with Adelaide Lightning.
Supported by the Victorian Government, the game will feature a number of Australia’s best female players, including four-time Olympian Laura Hodges, rising stars within the Opals program Maddie Garrick and Alice Kunek (pictured), along with successful Australian juniors Monique Conti and Anneli Maley.
The game will be played on Saturday January 7 with tip-off at 7:30pm. Boomers General Manager Justin Nelson believes the Geelong game is the start of bigger things to come as Melbourne’s WNBL club spreads its wings.
“Geelong and the surf-coast region is home to thousands of basketball players, and many more supporters of the game. During the Summer period the area swells with holidaymakers and we want to ensure they got their fix of elite-level sport during the festive season,” said Nelson.
“The support of Minister John Eren, Deakin University, Basketball Geelong and Events Geelong is very much welcomed by the Boomers, in particular everyone’s focus on supporting and furthering women’s sport in the community is to be congratulated.”
The Arena is preparing for a full house – there will be approximately 1,600 tickets are available to the game, while a pre-match function with Australian basketball superstar Lauren Jackson is also available to the general public.
One of the exciting things Nelson is urging those who have yet to attend a Boomers game to look out for is the opportunity to meet the players out on the court after the game.
“I think one thing people are amazed by when they come to a Boomers game is just how close they can get to the action, especially after the game when our players stay out on court and meet all the fans, signing autographs and taking photos. It’s the connection with the players that makes it such a great night out for the family,” said Nelson.
“And then of course there’s Dexter’s Conga Line, but that’s an event within the event and probably deserves its own article!”
