A three-day camp in Ballarat has delivered plenty of benefits for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers ahead of the 2015/16 WNBL season and been labelled a successful step to potentially taking regular season games to the Mars Minerdome in the future.
The Boomers enjoyed a Women In Sport luncheon, a trip to Sovereign Hill, a number of training sessions and a pre-season game against the Bendigo Spirit during their stay.
During their visit to Sovereign Hill the team took the chance to take a step back in time and dress for a photo that brought plenty of laughter, while the Women In Sport lunch was well attended by local council, Ballarat business owners and other elite-level female athletes.
“The trip to Ballarat was an exciting first step between the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and Ballarat Basketball,” said Boomers GM Justin Nelson, adding “We have a desire to do more in the region and work hard at promoting the WNBL and the Boomers to what is a very passionate and dedicated basketball community.”
“Ballarat Basketball and the City of Ballarat are undertaking a number of exciting projects, including some fantastic new facilities, all of which leads us to believe there will be an opportunity for more involvement with elite-level women’s basketball in the future.”
With further pre-season games against Adelaide (September 25 @ Nunawading Basketball Stadium) and Dandenong (October 1 @ East Doncaster Secondary College) coming up, the Boomers are encouraging all supporters to get along and purchase a membership ahead of an opening round clash against Adelaide on Saturday October 10.
