Boomers Welcome New Assistant Coach

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are pleased to announce the appointment of Al McAughtry as assistant coach for the coming 2016/17 WNBL season.

A seasoned and highly respected senior coach in Victorian basketball, McAughtry currently coaches in the Diamond Valley program and has enjoyed much success over the years with the development of players coming through various levels of the game.

“Al and I worked together a lot in the past and we’ve always developed a good partnership,” said Boomers Coach, Guy Molloy.

“He is an expert in making all the behind the scenes details happen, and I have no doubt all our players will grow to respect and appreciate his work.”

For McAughtry, the chance to work at the elite level is something he is very much looking forward to.

“The opportunity to join the Boomers family is a fantastic honour and something I am looking forward to doing,” said McAughtry.

“Getting the chance to work with Guy again was a huge reason to jump in and go back to school, and to continue to learn and progress. The fact it is with an elite playing group and a wonderful organisation is a bonus.

“I look forward to working with the players, staff and the organisation to help progress the team next season.”

In coming weeks the Boomers will announce its full coaching staff, including development coaches, which Molloy says are important members of the club’s growing desire to build player, and coaching pathways.

“It’s really important we keep unearthing Victorian coaches and provide them with a pathway, just like we do with players.

“Developing coaches and providing them with experience at this level of the game is something we take very seriously. We look forward to making some more announcements and welcoming new development coaches in the near future,” Molloy added.
