The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are set to bring the WNBL to fans on the eve of Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup and the club couldn’t be happier with its decision to experiment with Monday night basketball.
The blockbuster clash against Townsville Fire is the first of two Monday night games for the Boomers, the latter will be played on the eve of another public holiday (Australia Day) on January 25th against Dandenong.
According to Boomers GM, Justin Nelson, the Cup Eve game has all the ingredients to draw a good crowd.
“We need to keep evolving and delivering the WNBL to the fans when it best fits in with their schedule,” said Nelson, adding “Melbourne is a strong sporting city and competition for supporters is intense, but we have elite female athletes who are incredible role models, we put on a good show and we play at a very accessible and modern stadium, so we have all the right ingredients to produce a fun night out for families.”
“Cup Eve doesn’t clash with any other junior or senior basketball in Melbourne. Ideally, we’d really like to also see new families as well. We need to keep growing the league and hopefully big games on the eve of public holidays proves an opportunity to gain more interest in the WNBL.”
Tickets to the Boomers vs Fire game on Monday November 2 (7:30pm start at the State Basketball Centre) are available at the door or you can purchase them online at www.trybooking.com/HLXE
