As the noise levels lifted at the State Basketball Centre on Sunday afternoon, so too did the rise of a memorable Deakin Melbourne Boomers comeback against the Bendigo Spirit.
Following a dominant first half, the visiting Spirit entered the second half against a sluggish Melbourne with a 14pt lead, which actually ballooned to 17pts prior to a stunning comeback by the Boomers.
Another vocal home crowd rode the wave of excitement as Maddie Garrick (14pts) in her 150th WNBL game, Brittany Smart (19pts,9rbs) and Rebecca Cole (13pts) got things rolling.
A 26-12 third period by the home team dragged it back to an even contest entering the final quarter, which the Boomers won 2016 to claim a fantastic win.
Capping off a weekend featuring two wins, the Boomers sit equal top with arch rival Dandenong, no doubt enhancing a Melbourne Cup Eve showdown between the pair on Monday October 31.
“It’s a blockbuster in the WNBL, no doubt about that,” said Boomers GM Justin Nelson ahead of the holiday eve clash.
“We’re expecting a massive crowd, it will be a fully-ticketed event and it’s certainly got the added edge of being a top-of-the-ladder clash,” added Nelson.
“To ensure a seat, we are encouraging all fans to book online and reserve their seats.”
