Huge Crowd Expected For Aus Day Eve 1

Aptly titled Aus Day Eve 1, a huge crowd is expected for Monday night’s blockbuster Melbourne Derby between the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and Jayco Dandenong Rangers.

Record pre-sales coupled with free entry for any child wearing their club/association colours is certain to see the State Basketball Centre booming with its biggest ever Wattle Valley WNBL crowd.

“Yeah I’ve heard it referred to as Aus Day Eve 1 a few times now, which I think is great and shows everyone is getting right behind the concept,” beamed Boomers GM, Justin Nelson.

“We’ve been really pleased with the hype and build-up to the game, I know the players from both teams are going to get a real buzz from playing in front of such a big crowd. This is exactly what the league needs,” added Nelson.

Boomers coach Guy Molloy is expecting another fierce battle between two teams who have built up a rivalry over many years.

“The promotion for this game has been terrific, we can’t wait to see all the kids in their uniforms out supporting the WNBL,” said Molloy, adding “I think we’ve proven that the fans want this, it’s a genuine rivalry and I know both teams lift a level for a Melbourne derby.”

Tip-off is at 7:30pm, though Nelson is encouraging everyone to arrive early.

“Parking is free and the stadium is very easy to get to, but with the numbers we are expecting I would encourage people to get there before 7pm. We have a heap of merchandise to check out and I’m sure Dexter the Dragon will be there to keep everyone entertained.”

As for the concept of an annual game on Australia Day Eve, the Boomers GM couldn’t be happier with the response.

“Our focus has always been on making this a showcase event for the league. Let’s hope this is just the start of bigger things come in future years. I hope so.”
