Following on from a number of successful initiatives last season, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers will again play on the eve of two public holidays this season with rival Dandenong set to be the opposing team for both games.
Monday October 31st (Melbourne Cup Eve) and Wednesday January 25th (Australia Day Eve) are two dates Boomers GM Justin Nelson says “every basketball fan across Melbourne needs to put in the calendar.”
“We have twelve great home games to promote, headlined by two showdowns against our biggest rival on the eve of the Melbourne Cup and Australia Day,” confirmed Nelson ahead of the expected release of the full 2016/17 WNBL schedule.
Last season’s Australia Day Eve clash was a major talking point of the WNBL season, the 2,500 crowd the biggest turnout to a single WNBL game, including finals. This season the Boomers expect more than 3,000 to each game.
“We said last season that we wanted to create something really special for women’s basketball and I think we got off to a great start. The Australia Day Eve game this season will be a sell-out, people are already asking when they can start buying tickets,” said Nelson.
“The Boomers want to create longevity out of these two holiday-eve games, we believe both have the potential to be the biggest games outside of finals each year in the WNBL. Everyone loves a Melbourne derby and both dates have already started to be linked to the WNBL, which is important when so many other sports are searching for space in a crowded market.”
The Boomers will launch single-game ticket sales in the near future with Nelson confirming the best way for supporters to snap up the best seats to games, including the holiday-eve blockbusters, is to buy a membership.
“Our membership sales are tracking three times bigger than last season, so there is a real sense of excitement out there. If you want the best seats at games and want to get close to the team with heaps of extra benefits for members, join today.”
