Victorian Minister for Sport, John Eren, has been joined by Lauren Jackson, Kasey Burton and two aspiring Geelong Supercats players to formally announce the return of the WNBL to Geelong this Summer.
Dubbed the Boomers In Geelong, the game will take place on Saturday January 7 at The Arena with the Deakin Melbourne Boomers hosting Adelaide Lightning.
Tickets are now on sale HERE.
“When Australians think of women’s basketball, they think of the Boomers. To have this iconic WNBL brand here in Geelong is a big coup for the city,” John Eren said.
Announced at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus, Deakin Vice Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, said: “Our partnership with the Boomers has cemented Deakin’s commitment to supporting women’s sport while giving our communities a sensational WNBL team that we can follow with pride. I encourage the Geelong community to embrace the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and get to the game on January 7.”
Melbourne Boomers Chair, Tony Hallam, said the match – the first WNBL game to be played in Geelong since 2008 – will be more than just an opportunity to watch elite sport.
“It’s about providing an opportunity to see and interact with world-class basketballers and role models – and having a night out that the whole family can share and enjoy,” he said.
“I’m really hoping Geelong basketball fans will adopt us and treat the Melbourne Boomers as their home team!”
Talking to assembled media, Lauren Jackson said that exposing women’s basketball to a wider audience was a key to underpinning the future growth and success of the WNBL.
“Basketball is a very popular sport in terms of participation in regional areas, and it’s important to build on that base for the future of both the WNBL and indeed the Australian Opals. I know there are some very talented juniors in Geelong,” she said.
“I grew up in Albury, and I cannot tell you how much I would have loved and benefitted from the opportunities to see professionals in action on court as role models when I was a little kid.”
Tickets to the January 7 game start from $10. There will also be 150 tickets available to an exclusive pre-game function with Lauren Jackson. All tickets are now on sale can be booked HERE.
