Deakin Melbourne Boomers forward Tegan Cunningham is looking forward to taking the WNBL to Geelong this Saturday night, believing basketball fans in the region won’t go home disappointed with what they see.
“Playing in Geelong this Saturday is a great opportunity for regional Victoria to catch a glimpse of what the Melbourne Boomers are all about,” said Tegan, adding, “Fans will not be left disappointed, on and off the court we always aim to put on a good show.”
Despite a 4-11 win-loss record this season, the Boomers have fought back from their early-2016 crisis point and progressed quickly off the court to cement the iconic club’s future. The incredible support of the fans hasn’t been lost on the Boomers players or management with crowds up by 50 per cent this season.
“Our fan base is growing rapidly and we’re excited to extend that support across Victoria and showcase the amazing talent playing in the WNBL,” Tegan added.
“We want to see the Geelong community come out and support women’s sport and the WNBL. And of course we want them cheering loudly for the Boomers.”
For Coach Guy Molloy, the opportunity to play at The Arena in Geelong is one that resonates strongly with him.
“As coach of the Boomers I am thrilled to be coaching a WNBL team in such an iconic basketball stadium as The Arena,” said Molloy.
“Over the years I’ve had the fortune to coach NBL and SEABL teams at The Arena, and it will be great to now do that in the WNBL.
“Geelong is rich in its basketball history and we hope our fans will come out and support the team, and of course we hope to build a whole new fan base amongst the Geelong community,” added Molloy.
