Townsville Fire too good for Perth Lynx

The Perth Lynx have been defeated by the Townsville Fire 62-84, in the first of three meetings between the top two sides from last season.

After a back-and-forth first half, Townsville pulled away with an 8-0 run to start the third quarter, and were too good for the Lynx across the final two periods.

Sami Whitcomb did her part for the Lynx, scoring 25 points to go with two steals and three rebounds, while Carley Mijovic was solid with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

After assisting on 22 of their 34 baskets during Friday’s win over the Sydney Flames, the Lynx struggled to move the ball against Townsville, recording just three assists on 25 makes.

Natalie Burton’s eight rebounds and two blocks, along with nine points, five rebounds and three blocks from Ruth Hamblin, helped slow the Fire on the interior, though reigning WNBL MVP Suzy Batkovic managed 25 points to help her team to victory.

After shooting 53 per cent from three as a group against Sydney, the Lynx struggled from beyond the arc against the Fire, connecting on just 27 per cent from deep.

The Perth Lynx will now return home with a 1-1 record on their opening road trip of the season, and will look to make some adjustments ahead of their trip to Melbourne and Dandenong next weekend.
