The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames bounced back in great fashion against the University of Canberra Capitals last night in front of a home crowd, coming out eventual winners 85-67.

After a tough loss in Perth in round one of the Wattle Valley WNBL season, the Flames welcomed new import Carolyn Swords to their line-up, adding a great target inside the paint for the team. In her fifteen minutes of play she was efficient contributing 13 points, including nine for ten from the free throw line.

The Flames got out to a strong lead in the first quarter looking dominant as scoring opportunities came easily to Captain Katie Ebzery who tallied a number of points within a matter of minutes. She ended the game leading all scorers with 18 points demonstrating her hard work in the off season with the Opals paid off.

Canberra were not to go down without a fight however, and after two solid quarters of play, they found themselves chasing the home side by six points going into the final term. A competitive start driven by some fantastic play by Abby Bishop saw the team find a glimmer of hope however at the seven minute mark in the quarter these dreams were quashed by the Flames who connected efficiently from long range in the dying minutes.

Head Coach, Shannon Seebohm was pleased with his sides result, believing the team had progressed since their disappointing loss the week prior. “We spent a lot of time speaking about how we played against Perth and picked a couple of key areas we wanted to improve upon. It eventuated in a win and I think we’re on the right track.” He said.

On Swords performance Seebohm stated, “I think Carolyn is going to add something really special to the team. There are not many players going around with her size and ability. She’s only had one walk through practise session with us so I can’t wait to see what happens when we build on that.”

The Flames have an extremely busy start to the season, now focussing their efforts on their upcoming match in Adelaide this Saturday at 7:30pm. After some time on the road they will be looking forward to having a couple of regular training weeks to integrate their new import. We’re excited for things to come!
