The Sydney Uni Sparks will look to the WNBL Championship winning Brydens Sydney Uni Flames for inspiration ahead of their debut game in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) against the Albury/Wodonga Bandits.

The Sparks coaching staff and squad were announced late February at the Sydney Uni Flames WNBL presentation evening. The program was created as a pathway for young female athletes in New South Wales. With the squad primarily made up of young women who are either studying at University or in their final year of studies in high school, the partnership with Sydney University has allowed the focus of the program to be based on the development of student-athletes.

The young Sparks team are lucky enough to have the experience of Karen Dalton, Cheryl Chambers, Belinda Snell and Hayley Moffatt at the helm.

Sydney Uni Sparks player Susannah Walmsley said: “The coaching staff contribute so much knowledge and expertise in every aspect of the game. “

“To be able to learn the game from women who not only have a wealth of experience in the SEABL and WNBL competitions on home soil, but have also experienced World Championships and Olympic Games is absolutely invaluable.”

Team mate, Shanae Greaves is perhaps the most experienced player in this young team when it comes to the SEABL competition. When asked about the season ahead she added: “Both the quality of the SEABL competition and the calibre of coaches at the Sparks will contribute to our development over the season.”

“I’m super keen to start this season with such a great bunch of girls”

The Sparks kick off their season on Saturday 25th March at 6pm in Albury.

Their first home game is in Round 2 on Saturday 1st April at 6pm against Nunawading.
