Fire claim WNBL title

January 21, 2018 | Townsville Fire news

The JCU Townsville Fire are the WNBL champions for the third time in four seasons after defeating Melbourne 70-57.

Inspired by six-time WNBL MVP and Rachael Sporn Medallist Suzy Batkovic, the Fire lead from wire-to-wire to ensure their dynasty, holding out a brave Boomers’ line-up.

Batkovic was simply brilliant in the decider as she posted a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds.

In game number 350, Kelly Wilson celebrated her third title with nine points, five rebounds and three assists, while Laurin Mincy played her most meaningful four quarters in a Fire singlet with 11 points and three rebounds.

Having suffered an agonising loss in Melbourne just three days ago, the Fire put the pain behind them as they produced a collective effort.

While Batkovic was electrifying, Cayla George did the grunt work with six points and 13 rebounds.

Leading by six at quarter-time, the Fire were able to stretch it out to double digits during the second but the Boomers closed to eight at half-time.

With a 12-point lead at the main change, the Fire were able to hold their own down the stretch as the party started in Townsville.
