Malott earns WNBL gong

JCU Townsville Fire forward Ally Malott has earnt her first selection in the Chemist Warehouse WNBL Team of the Week.

Having relished her expanded role with the Fire following the neck injury to star centre Suzy Batkovic, Malott was simply brilliant against Perth on Friday night as she paced the team with 19 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.

The 26-year-old was also perfect from beyond the arc as she stroked three-from-three to continue her hot hand from the perimeter.

Having recovered from ankle surgery in the off-season, Malott has steadily worked her way back to full health, averaging 15 points over the past six games with all of them in double figures.

“I’ve gained a bit of confidence as games go on and throughout trainings the last couple of weeks I’ve tried to be more aggressive and my team has a lot of confidence in me so that helps,” Malott said.

“We’re all learning to play a lot better together. Our spacing has improved a lot and we’re moving without the ball.

“It’s a nice honour (to be named in the team of the week), but I think it could have gone to several people on our team this week.

“We all had a really good group effort against Perth and we shared the ball really well so it was a really fun game to play.”

The Fire face a crucial weekend as they travel to Bendigo on Friday night to face the Spirit before returning to Townsville to host the UC Capitals on Sunday.

The Fire and the Capitals face off at Townsville Stadium from 3pm.
