The JCU Townsville Fire has today (30/9) announced NRL premiership winner Michael Morgan as their fourth Ambassador for the 2016/17 WNBL season.
The North Queensland Cowboys star, who has made five Origin appearances for Queensland and boasts a Test cap for Australia, was born and raised in Townsville before helping deliver the club’s maiden NRL premiership win last season.
Recently announced in the Kangaroos’ train-on squad, Morgan joins former teammate Glenn Hall, seven-time major champion Karrie Webb and country signing sensation Jade Holland as Fire Ambassadors.
“I love this city and I love what the Fire has done for it,” Morgan said.
“I’m a proud Townsville person and it’s great that there is a pathway for young females to follow their dreams and play at the highest level in the WNBL.
“The Fire has done so well in recent season – they’re a successful sporting club in their own right – and it’s great that we have another national team in the city that we can support.”
Having made his Cowboys debut as an 18-year-old, Morgan has been regularly spotted in the stands at Townsville Stadium including March’s successful title defence against the Perth Lynx.
Having been approached to take on a formal role with the club, the gun five-eighth was only too happy to help.
“We’re delighted to have Michael joining our club,” Fire General Manager Richard Goodbody said.
“He’s always been extremely supportive of the Fire including last year’s finals series and he is a much-loved figure of the Cowboys faithful.
“We look forward to working with him, along with Glenn, Karrie and Jade, in highlighting why Townsville is one of the best places in the world to live and play sport.”
The Fire commence their WNBL title defence at home on Sunday, October 9 with a Grand Final rematch against Perth.
Tickets go on sale to the general public tomorrow.
