Reigning Rachael Sporn Medallist Micaela Cocks has returned to North Queensland ahead of the JCU Townsville Fire’s title defence.

Having spent the off-season attempting to guide New Zealand into the Rio Olympics, Cocks, who was named the Grand Final MVP in the WNBL’s first ever best-of-three series, looked refreshed having touched down yesterday.

The Fire will commence pre-season on September 5 and Cocks, who is the club’s third most capped player, said it was an easy decision to ink a two-year contract extension.

“Townsville is my home away from home,” Cocks said.

“I always wanted to return and it is such a good place to play.

“It’s exciting to be back for another season and I’m looking forward to coming pre-season training.”

Cocks is one of six championship players returning for the Fire including Tall Ferns teammate Chevannah Paalvast, while Kelly Wilson and Kayla Standish have both played for the club previously.

The Fire have one spot to fill on their roster and will make an announcement shortly.
