Defending champs serve notice

Fire V Adelaide lightning 2015-1-9

The JCU Townsville Fire have risen to the top of the Wattle Valley WNBL ladder after securing a 28-point win over the Adelaide Lightning.

The Fire flew out of the blocks at Adelaide Arena tonight as they set the early pace en route to a 88-60 win.

It caps off a successful New Year’s weekend for the Fire, with the victory serving notice to the remainder of the WNBL following their successful sweep of the Doomsday Double.

Cayla George led the way for the visitors with an impressive 26 points and 12 rebounds, while captain Suzy Batkovic (17 points and nine rebounds) and Micaela Cocks (12 points and five rebounds) also played telling roles.

The Fire recorded seven consecutive points before the hosts even got on the board, setting the tone early and going into the first break with a 29-19 lead.

The Fire then capped off the opening half with a nine-point lead, and entered the final term leaving Adelaide with little chance of a comeback, leading 67-53.

The fourth quarter left little doubt regarding the Fire’s dominance with them extending their already impressive lead to a 28-point advantage.

“We were really pleased with our defence throughout the road trip,” assistant coach Claudia Brassard said.

“It’s something that we’ve been working on.

“With one of our starters out (Tamara Tatham), we were pleased with the contribution of our bench.

“They stood up when they were counted and were instrumental in both wins.”

The Fire return to action next week when they host the SEQ Stars at the Townsville RSL Stadium from 7pm on Saturday night.
