Fire ready for SEQ clash

Fire v Bendigo 4 Dec 2015-7483

JCU Townsville Fire coach Chris Lucas believes the reigning Wattle Valley WNBL champions will need to be at the peak of their powers ahead of Saturday night’s must-win game against SEQ.

For the first time, the Stars will step foot in the WNBL’s most intimidating fortress, Townsville RSL Stadium, but will be full of confidence after defeating the Fire in the round before Christmas.

Lucas conceded that his team failed to match the Stars’ intensity on that occasion, and if they want to reverse the result, they must be good to go come tip-off time.

“You need to be ready for every game,” Lucas said.

“We weren’t ready for that game and they jumped us…(but) we’re really looking forward to trying to win four in a row.”

Lucas highlighted a number of deficiencies during the round 11 loss including the Fire’s transition defence and their possession and is looking to remedy that on Saturday night.

A victory over the Stars will not only provide a series win, but will also significantly bolster the Fire’s finals aspirations.

“We’re fully aware of the areas that they have strengths in and we’re trying to counter that,” Lucas said.

“They’ve got a quality roster and we’re preparing accordingly.”

The Fire host the Stars from 7pm on Saturday night.
