The JCU Townsville Fire will bring in the New Year on their home floor with a WNBL blockbuster against Melbourne.
Having played Perth on the road in the corresponding game last season, the Fire actively sought the marquee timeslot, which has been an iconic NBL fixture in the city through the Townsville Crocodiles, and will look to make it an annual affair.
Fire General Manager said the New Year’s Eve game against the Boomers was a coup for the club and they were anticipating a sell-out.
“We’re over the moon to be playing at home on New Year’s Eve,” Goodbody said.
“The Crocs have done an amazing job of making basketball synonymous with New Year’s Eve in Townsville and we hope that we will be able to carry on their legacy.
“We’re looking forward to the WNBL formally announcing the entire draw and Fire fans will like what they see.”
Having claimed back-to-back championships, the Fire’s bid for an historic three-peat will run in conjunction with their off-court ambitions to take their at-match experience to a whole new level.
The introduction of in-stadium LED screens – as has been seen during the past two finals campaigns – will allow the Fire to draw their members and fans closer to them than ever before.
“We believe we’ve set the standard in the WNBL over the past few years and we want to raise the bar again,” Goodbody said.
“It’s a competitive market and we want our members and fans to see a great show on the court, but just as importantly, we want them to be treated to a great show off it as well.
“We’ve got some exciting plans in place that have never been seen in the WNBL before.”
The WNBL draw is expected to be announced imminently.
