The JCU Townsville Fire has turned Dandenong Stadium into the Rangers’ own house of horrors after securing an 83-75 victory on Halloween.
Led by their vaunted front court of Suzy Batkovic and Cayla George, who posted identical figures with 26 points and 11 rebounds, the Fire jumped the Rangers in the first term to open up a double-digit lead which they would never surrender.
Dominating the rebound count – particularly on the offensive end – the Fire’s twin towers went to work inside and were well supported by Mia Murray (11 points and 10 rebounds).
Having stretched their lead to 18 halfway through the second term, the Fire looked headed for a third huge win in as many games, but the Rangers rallied through captain Steph Cumming.
The Fire championship winner paced her new team with 22 points and four rebounds and was well supported by Sarah Blicavs (20 points and six rebounds), but the Fire responded to every challenge with a telling road win.
“It was a good win against one of the WNBL’s form sides,” assistant coach Claudia Brassard said.
“We set ourselves the target of trying to win the first game of every double-header and now we will bank that and move on to Melbourne.”
The Fire face the Melbourne Boomers at the Victorian Basketball Centre on Monday night, with a victory moving them to the top of the ladder.
