JCU Townsville Fire coach Chris Lucas is bracing himself for a southern onslaught ahead of Sunday’s round two fixture against the University of Canberra Capitals.
Having helped steer the Capitals to two titles during his time in Canberra, Lucas is well aware of the fire power they possess – led by reigning Wattle Valley WNBL MVP Abby Bishop – and is ensuring that his own side stays focussed on the task at hand.
“Look, every team is quality in this league and the Caps are no different,” Lucas said.
“I think there a really solid group.
“When you lose it’s a different mindset and we’ll prepare accordingly, but Bendigo proved that the other night didn’t they…they’ll be desperate and we will have to match that.”
Having jumped the Spirit during their season opener, the Fire were outscored 47-66 in the following three-and-a-half quarters in front of their home fans.
Despite the loss, Lucas has been pleased with the response at training during the week and is looking for an improved effort on Sunday.
“I’ve got after them a little bit but Monday and Tuesday was pretty tough,” Lucas said.
“And they understand that that performance is not where we want to be and I’m really happy with the adjustments that we have made this week and the intensity level at practice has been really good.”
The Fire host the Capitals at Townsville RSL Stadium from 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
