The Spirit dampen the Fire

The JCU Townsville Fire’s title defence has gotten off to a rocky start with a 64-72 loss to the Bendigo Spirit.

With the Fire unveiling their championship banner prior to tip-off, the hosts got off to a hot start as Micaela Cocks made a blistering start.

Having dropped their season opener to South East Queensland last night, the Spirit were feeling the pinch as the Fire opened up an 11-point lead off the back of a Suzy Batkovic triple.

A 10-0 run to close out the term meant the two teams went into the first change locked at 19-19 before the Spirit snatched the lead and never looked back.

Post-Match Press Conference

Suzy Batkovic paced the Fire with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Canadian Olympian Tamara Tatham made a promising debut with 10 points and six rebounds.

Gabe Richards posted 19 points and six rebounds for the winners, while Kelsey Griffin finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

“You never go into any game looking to lose that’s for sure and it’s very disappointing to be quite honest with you,” Lucas said.

“I’m not happy with the performance at all.

“They set the tone, they were more aggressive than we were and I thought we were passive in our approach.”
