Mackay’s Jacqui Zelenka will return to the JCU Townsville Fire for a tilt at an historic three-peat after signing a one-year contract extension.
Having joined the Fire in 2014/15 as a development player, Zelenka, who was upgraded to a full contract last season, was presented with a new offer after enjoying a strong start to the QBL season with the Meteorettes where she is averaging 11.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in the front court.
Newly-appointed head coach Claudia Brassard said she had no hesitation in bringing Zelenka back for another campaign.
“Jacqui is a no-fuss player that brings a lot to our group,” Brassard said.
“Her game has steadily improved over the past two seasons and we expect that to continue in 2016/17.
“She’s currently enjoying a strong QBL campaign with Mackay and we hope that form continues in the WNBL season.”
With the Fire poised to stage the Mackay Pride Community Camp as part of their pre-season preparations, Zelenka will get the unique opportunity to suit up in front of her home fans against the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames on September 17.
The 24-year-old said she was looking forward to returning to the Fire and playing under Brassard.
“I’m excited to be a part of the program once again and I’m looking forward to playing my role,” Zelenka said.
“There is still so much I can learn off the likes of Suzy Batkovic and Mia Murray, as well as the coaching staff.
“I’m also really looking forward to having a pre-season game in Mackay and I hope it inspires young girls from my hometown to work hard and achieve their own dreams.”
Tickets to the Mackay Pride pre-season encounter went on sale yesterday with the Fire anticipating a sold out arena.
Zelenka’s signing takes the Fire’s squad to seven in 2016/17, with the two-time reigning WNBL champions expected to make further announcements over the next week.
