University of Canberra Capitals guard Abbey Wehrung will miss the rest of the 2016/2017 WNBL season after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s 77-52 win over Bendigo Spirit.
Wehrung sustained a fall in the third quarter. Initial scans came back clear but a subsequent MRI revealed Wehrung has suffered ligament damage and will be sidelined for at least eight weeks.
University of Canberra Capitals head coach Paul Goriss said the team was disappointed to lose Wehrung at such a crucial time in the season.
“Abbey has been a standout player for us all season and she was playing an outstanding game on Sunday,” Goriss said.
“She will be missed but the playing group remains firmly focused on our remaining games against Adelaide and Townsville. We wish Abbey the very best with her recovery and we know she will be cheering us on from the sidelines.”
The UC Capitals play Adelaide Lightning at home on Thursday before travelling north to meet the Townsville Fire on Saturday.
