The Adelaide Lightning is proud to announce the appointment of Tess Madgen as Special Advisor as part of an exciting new chapter in the Lightning’s journey. This comes after the appointment of former Melbourne Boomers Executive Director, Bernadette Dodd, as interim General Manager to help take the Lightning forward.

A South Australian and lifelong supporter of the Lightning, Madgen brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and insight to the role. The veteran Opals star and WNBL Champion will work closely with the club on key areas including player development, high-performance culture, and long-term strategic development.

One of the foundation teams of the WNBL, the Lightning have long been a symbol of pride for South Australians with the club holding five Championships and a reputation of producing some of the game’s most iconic names. Now, the Lightning are focusing on building a new future with Madgen’s appointment signalling confidence in their journey.

“Tess brings more than on-court experience – she brings a belief of what the club can be,” said interim Adelaide Lightning General Manager Bernie Dodd.
“A belief in the strength of South Australian Basketball and in the work it takes to create a winning culture. Her leadership, competitive edge and deep roots in the state make her an invaluable part of the build and I’m excited to work with her.”

Born and raised in South Australia, Madgen grew up idolising Lightning stars and attending games at the peak of the club’s dominance. Her connection to the club is not just professional – it’s personal.

“I remember sitting in the stands as a kid, watching the Lightning dominate the league – those moments inspired my own journey in basketball,” said Madgen.

“To now be able to give back and help rebuild this incredible club is special. I believe in what the Lightning can be again – a team that competes for Championships, inspires young girls to pick up a basketball, and brings the South Australian basketball community together.”
