Is Kadi Sissoko the WNBL’s next Unicorn?

July 5, 2025 | WNBL news

UC Capitals Head Coach Paul Goriss has labelled his new recruit, Kadi Sissoko, as the sort-after “unicorn” of the competition.

The former Phoenix Mercury draft pick joins the Capitals as their first import signing, coming over from France to start a new chapter in her career down under.

At 6’2”, Sissoko has impressive athleticism and experience right across the globe, playing in the American College system, the WNBA, France, Turkey and now Australia.

Goriss explained one of the key issues last season was their frontcourt size – which Sissoko will immediately remedy.

“The depth (in the front court) that we had to have coming into this season was obviously a priority for us,” Goriss said.

“I know there’s a term around basketball through the last couple of years as having ‘unicorns’, and Kadi is definitely one of the closest things that we’re going have here to a unicorn.

“(She) has great versatility at both ends of the floor, can defend multiple positions, score in transition, get the ball on the floor, shoot the three and she can post up smaller defenders.

“That’s why I said I’m really excited to be able to coach her, I’ve seen her up close and know what she can do.”

As Assistant Coach with the Atlanta Dream, Goriss has first hand experience on how dangerous Sissoko can be after coaching against her in the WNBA.

Having seen what she can do, Goriss said her versatility on both ends will be a game-changing addition to their WNBL26 squad.

“Her athleticism is going to be a huge point of difference at both ends of the floor, and how hard she plays. And I just think that what she wants to achieve and still the upside to her game is massive and it’s going to be huge for us.”

With the additions of Zitina Aokuso, Sara Blicavs and Sissoko – the Capitals frontcourt has become one of the league’s most fearsome.
