Kerryn Mitchell Appointed Head Coach of Adelaide WNBL Team

The WNBL is proud to announce the appointment of Kerryn Mitchell as Head Coach for the Adelaide team’s upcoming WNBL season, marking a key turning point in one of the Women’s National Basketball League’s (WNBL) longest-standing clubs.

Mitchell brings a wealth of knowledge to the role as a decorated player herself across the WNBL and through Europe. Her coaching journey began in Melbourne where she developed a successful Basketball Academy at Flinders College before progressing to Assistant Coach at the Southside Flyers. Mitchell currently holds the role of Assistant Coach with the New Zealand Tall Ferns and will coach the Tall Ferns and WNBL team co-currently.

WNBL CEO Jennie Sager said the pool of candidates was incredibly strong and that Mitchell’s vision and enthusiasm was impressive.

“Kerryn is an exceptional leader who embodies the professionalism, passion and boldness our league is striving for,” said Ms Sager.

“Her vision for Adelaide aligns perfectly with our goals to bring fresh energy to the club and to connect deeper with the community. This is a big step forward for South Australian basketball.”

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Adelaide team with the club recently confirmed for the new WNBL, thanks to support from the South Australian Government which secured the future of elite women’s basketball in the state.

Mitchell said she is looking forward to getting started in her new role.

“The Adelaide team has a rich history and a passionate community behind it,” Mitchell said.

“I’m excited to be part of a high-performing team that reflects the pride of South Australia, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Emily Bourke added: “Preserving the legacy of the
Adelaide Lightning was a priority for our Government, as was continuing to promote basketball and
physical activity among girls.”

“This is an important milestone in the team’s future which the South Australian community has
fought for, ensuring local representation in the national competition.”
