Talented playmaking guard Mikhaeala Cann will make her return to WNBL courts with the Sydney Flames for the WNBL 2025/26 season after a four season hiatus.
The 31-year-old last played in the 2018/19 season for the Townsville Fire before taking time off to start a family, having three children between her last campaign and the coming season.
Between WNBL stints, Cann has been dominant in the NBL1 North with the Logan Thunder, leading them to the 2021 conference Championship and an undefeated regular season record in 2022 – eventually losing to the Townville Flames in the Grand Final.
Cann joins the Flames as a premier floor general, currently averaging the second-most assists per game across the entire country and the five NBL1 conferences (first in the North).
Head Coach Guy Molloy explained what Cann will add to his Flames squad.
“Mikhaela is a really important signing for us for multiple reasons, most notably, helping take our culture to another level,” Molloy said.
“To have a player like Mikhaela that exemplifies being a great teammate, while being pass-first and willing to work hard every time she steps on the court, is really exciting for our club.”
Cann has embodied the challenges and rewards of being an athlete and a mother, she astonishingly took the court only eight days after giving birth to her third child, Dallas.
Two years later, Cann cannot believe she will return to the WNBL.
“Honestly, up until I went and played in New Zealand (in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa competition) last year, I honestly didn’t think playing back in the WNBL was a viable possibility for me,” she said.
“Playing in that competition, proved to myself that I could still play at a high level – not to mention my kids loved it.
“As a competitor, you always want to be playing at the highest level possible and challenging yourself, and I intend to make the most of this chance with the Flames. I believe my leadership style, both on and off the court aligns with that and I feel that can have a positive impact on the team.”
Cann joins new mother Lauren Nicholson, Emma Clarke, Carla Pitman, Shaneice Swain, Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Grace Berger and Keely Froling for Sydney’s 2025/26 roster. Follow all the latest WNBL moves via the Roster Tracker here.
