Sixth Woman of the Year re-signs with Bendigo

The Bendigo Spirit have re-signed Championship guard Abbey Wehrung for WNBL26.
The 29-year-old lockdown defender and sharpshooter had a breakout WNBL25 season, being named the league’s Sixth Woman of the Year.

As the Finals rotations became tighter, the Spirit’s roster of 12 became seven in the Grand Final Series, with Head Coach Kennedy Kereama playing Wehring the most minutes off the bench in the sweep over Townsville.
Last season, Wehrung averaged 7.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists, shooting 38.9 percent from the arc. As a knockdown shooter, Wehrung is the best of both worlds, able to lock down opposition scorers and space the floor for Bendigo’s stars like the incoming Iosbel Borlase.
Upon signing, the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup bronze medallist explained she is excited to stay with the Spirit for 2025/26.
“I’m super excited to be back with the Spirit for another season. Last season was obviously incredible and I’m excited to see what we can do this year,” she said.
“I love this club, I love this team, I love the community, and I love that I can play professionally so close to home. It was a no-brainer to re-sign – it’s such a special time to be playing at the Spirit.”
