The UC Capitals’ priorities in free agency

June 5, 2025 | WNBL news

After narrowly missing the finals, the UC Capitals are ready to reload during Free Agency.

After a remarkable WNBL 2024/25, which saw the club go from a 2-10 start to being only one game out of the final four spots, the year was capped off after star point guard Jade Melbourne made the All-WNBL Second Team and named the Fan MVP.

With the WNBA prospect locked in for next season, alongside Monique Bobongie, Jayda Clark, and Nyadiew Puoch – the Caps are set for a breakout 2025/26 season.

The recently re-signed head coach, Paul Goriss, explained the team’s priorities going into free agency are: Front-court players, shooting and experience.

“Our priorities are going to be in the four-and-five spot, building that frontcourt and blending our youth with some experience and some toughness into our frontcourt,” he told the Capitals.

“From a skill perspective, the way that the game is played now requires versatile, skilled bigs. We need a four that can step out on the perimeter and shoot the three and also be able take advantage of mismatches down low against switching defences.

“We also need a stronger rebounding presence, and ideally an athletic type of five that will help on defence and on the glass.”
