Flyers Secure Signature Of WNBL Legend And Opals Star Cayla George

July 3, 2025 | Southside Flyers news

The Southside Flyers are excited to announce the signing of Australian Opal and WNBL legend Cayla George to a two-year contract.

The signing is a significant addition to the Flyers’ roster as the club aims to turn around their efforts from last season. George will join Maddy Rocci, Manuela Puoch, and Isabelle Bourne at the Flyers for the upcoming season.

Cayla expressed excitement about joining a new group at the Flyers, saying

“It’s always really exciting to get around a new group and develop culture and chemistry.”

Cayla reunites with Head Coach Kristi Harrower, who was a big reason why she has put pen to paper, saying

“I loved working with Kristi in my last season with the Melbourne Boomers and with her at Opals tours and camps. We have a great relationship, and I’m super excited to be playing for her again. An absolute legend of the game.”

George brings an experienced head to the group, having played 18 seasons in the WNBL, most recently with the Sydney Flames. She has won four championships during this time with the Townsville Fire and Melbourne Boomers, and also won the league MVP award in 2023.

She is the WNBL’s all-time leader in rebounds, surpassing Rachael Sporn’s record of 3,229 boards in November 2023. She also reached the 5,000-point milestone in December 2024, further cementing her status as one of the league’s all-time greats.

Her experience extends internationally, being a long-standing and highly valued member of the Australian Opals. George has represented Australia at multiple Olympic Games, including Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, where she played a key role as a versatile forward and vocal leader.

In Paris 2024, George’s international career with the Australian Opals reached a significant milestone, where she contributed to the team’s bronze medal victory. This achievement marked the Opals’ first Olympic medal since 2012.

She has also competed in several FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cups, most notably helping the Opals claim a silver medal in 2018 and a bronze on home soil in 2022.

In addition to her national team success, she was also part of the 2023 WNBA Championship-winning Las Vegas Aces roster, further underscoring her elite pedigree and global basketball resume.

Head Coach Kristi Harrower is excited about signing George to the Flyers, saying

“She is an exceptional addition to our roster, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team.

Cayla is not only a proven leader but also a standout player known for her remarkable passing ability and three-point shooting skills.

Her understanding of the game and knack for winning are invaluable assets that will elevate our performance.

Cayla’s unselfish playing style and commitment to teamwork will undoubtedly help guide and inspire our players as we strive for success this season.”

As the 2025–26 WNBL season approaches, George’s integration into the Flyers’ system will be closely watched by fans. Her proven track record and veteran presence are expected to play a crucial role in the team’s pursuit of success in the upcoming season.
