Garlepp’s Gems defeat Brazil in World Cup opener

The Australian Gems, coached by Sydney Flames’ Renae Garlepp, have made a successful start to their FIBA under 19s World Cup in the Czech Republic.

The Gems, which also features Flame #228 Bonnie Deas, defeated Brazil 87-59 at the Starez Arena Vodova Hall.
Leading the way for the Gems were Maddison Ryan (22 points), Sitaya Fagan (15) and Deas (13).

From a statistical perspective, the game was won by Australia thanks to their dominance in rebounds (53-41 – including 17 offensive), assists (27-9), points off turnovers (27-8), fast break points (20-8) and bench points (30-6).
The Gems, whose opening game of Group B was cancelled due to Mali withdrawing from the tournament due to visa issues, next play France on Wednesday, July 18 from 4:15am (AEST) – live via FIBA’s YouTube Channel.
