Nicholson announces return to court with Sharks

June 24, 2025 | Sydney Flames news

Ahead of her return to the WNBL court next season, Sydney Flames’ Lauren Nicholson has signed with the Sutherland Sharks for the remainder of the NBL1 East season.

This news comes just 11 weeks after Nicholson, who guided the Sharks to the 2024 NBL1 East grand final, gave birth to her son Ari.

“I have recovered really well [since giving birth],” said Flame #133 Nicholson, who penned a new two-year deal with the Hoops Capital club in May.

“I think staying active throughout pregnancy really helped with my recovery post birth.

“Getting back into training after having Ari has had its challenges but I feel really great now.

“[Honestly] I really had no idea when I would return to the court but something in me wanted to get back as soon as possible because I missed it.

“I also have done a lot of preparation, so I guess I did expect to return sooner rather than later.”

St Mary’s alum Nicholson admits her return to the court hasn’t been without its challenges.

“Having a baby is definitely harder mentally and physically than you can ever prepare for,” the guard said.

“I think giving myself some grace on the harder days because at the end of the day, I’m a mum now and that’s my number one priority.”

Nicholson will make her official return to the hardwood on Sunday, when her Sharks take on Sydney from 3pm at Comets Stadium.

“I’m so excited to play with the girls again,” the WNBL24 Defensive Player of the Year said.

“They are my friends and I always have a good time playing for Sutherland.

“I love the club and I can’t wait for the weekend.”
