Undefeated run just the start for Garlepp’s Bears

The undefeated start to the NBL1 East season for Renae Garlepp and her Norths Bears continues to show why they’ll be a force to be reckoned with during the 2025 season.
The Bears, headlined by Flames duo Carla Pitman and Caitlyn Martin, moved to 8-0 on the season on Saturday, by easily accounting for Penrith.
Upon reflecting on their impressive run of form, Garlepp is happy with where her side is at but knows there is still plenty of work to do.
“We’re in a good place,” said Garlepp, who is also the Australian Gems coach.
“The connection and commitment across the group have been strong, and we’ve found ways to win in different situations.
“That said, we’re not reading too much into the results.
“We’ve still got plenty to work on, and our focus stays on where we’re at and what needs addressing to keep improving.”

Heading into their round seven fixture against the Centre of Excellence, who sit in third with a 7-1 record, Garlepp admits the team’s main focus has been improving themselves on the defensive end.
“Every game hasn’t been perfect, but our effort and intent are consistent,” said Flame #149 Garlepp.
“Offensively, we’re moving the ball well and playing unselfishly.
“Everyone’s bought into doing what’s best for the team — I’m lucky to coach a group like that.
“Defensively, we’ve still got areas to tighten up, and that’s where our focus is heading.”
Saturday’s fixture at the North Sydney Indoor Sports Centre tips off at 5pm.
