The Townsville Fire are thrilled to announce the signing of dynamic Australian guard Miela Sowah on a two-year contract, bolstering the team’s roster ahead of the 2025–26 WNBL season.

Sowah, 25, returns to Townsville where she began her WNBL journey as a development player during the Fire’s 2017–18 championship season. Since then, she has evolved into one of the league’s premier guards, earning All-WNBL Second Team honours last season and showcasing her prowess both domestically and internationally.

“We’re ecstatic to welcome Miela back to Townsville,” said Head Coach Shannon Seebohm. “She provides us with a scoring boost, and we believe she’s only just scratching the surface of her potential. We’re excited to work with her and be part of the next stage of her basketball journey.”

During the 2024–25 WNBL season with the Perth Lynx, Sowah averaged 15.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, solidifying her reputation as a clutch performer. Notably, she delivered standout performances, including a 23-point game against the Sydney Flames and a 24-point effort versus the UC Capitals.

Beyond the WNBL, Sowah has been a significant contributor to Australia’s national teams. She played a pivotal role in the Opals’ victory over New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Throwdown, leading all scorers with 23 points. Additionally, she was instrumental in the Gangurrus’ gold medal win at the 2025 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup, earning All-Tournament Team honours.

“I am super pumped to get back to where WNBL all started for me, as a development player and back to my U17 World Champion coach Shannon Seahbom said Sowah. “I’m excited to continue to develop my game under Shannon and take it to the next level. I can’t wait to get to work with this great team, coaching staff and of course the loyal community of fire fans! Eyes are on that trophy and I hope to be that extra piece for the team to get the fire one step further this year!”

Sowah’s is the first new signing of the Fire’s for the upcoming season – joining Courtney Woods, Abbey Ellis, Saffron Shiels, Lauren Cox, Alex Fowler and Alicia Froling.
