FIRE’S FINALS CHARGE

January 20, 2025 | Townsville Fire news

A dominant Townsville delivered capital punishment at the Fire Pit to register a third win on the spin, one which has ignited finals fever with four rounds still remaining. The hosts hit triple figures for the first time this season, securing a 105 to 71 victory. They won every quarter and never really looked like slipping up against the Caberrans, who themselves are harbouring hopes of a playoff berth. Townsville’s team performance was highlighted by two stats in particular, 29 assists and 35 points (a third of the total) scored by the bench.

What Woody Said

There was a double double double with Lauren Cox and Courtney Woods standouts. The latter led the rebound count with 11 and scored 19points while Woods finished with a game high 24 points and served up 11assists. The Co-Captain enjoyed watching her teammates take advantage of the space she found them in, time after time.

“We had 5 players in doubles figures nearly 7, and think that’s kind of what championship basketball is and it’s what we try do here. I think everyone felt involved everyone hopefully feels really good after that one, and yeah it was a fun game to be a part of.”

Saffron Shiels celebrated her birthday with a 14 point haul, Alicia Froling scored 11 and Nia Coffey made huge strides from her first to second appearance for the club with the import producing 13 points and 9 rebounds. Woods once again expressing the array of talent Townsville has.

“I think every week we nearly have a different leadingscorer so as we continually keep individually getting better, we’ll keepgetting better as group, and that’s exciting.”

Coach’s Comments

The coach oversaw a first win in front of his third child. Baby Harry was in the stands to start with until the orange army’s insane support proved a little too loud for the newborn, but mum found a quieter spot for the pair to watch what was a pretty comfortable night at the office for Shannon Seebohm.

“Jamie’s unbelievable and she loves coming to the games and look and you know we’re a basketball family and I guess you’re born into a basketball family and that’s just kind of how it is.  And you’re at basketball games when you’re 2days old and probably going to go to basketball games for the next 60, 70, 80years or whatever!  And he’s our lucky charm, I think that’s the first time we’ve scored over a hundred this year so hopefully he comes to the rest of the home games, and we can keep doing that.”

The self confessed basketball nerd was somewhatsurprisingly unaware Lauren Manfield reached a special milestone during theclash, when the point guard scored her 2000th WNBL point.

“I did not know that actually and look how awesome isthat! And her veteran presence and leadership this season has beenawesome for us.”

Another thing that’s awesome is midweek action at the Fire Pit! Wednesday night’s Flames game tips off at 6.30. Tickets are available.
